5th Grade Vocab Study Guide 3

To be given September 29th.

Students will be having weekly Math Vocab quizzes on Early Release Fridays.  In order to be able to answer word problems and open responses they need to understand the vocabulary used.  Please take a few minutes to go over these words with your child each day.  We are CONSTANTLY reviewing these in class as well.  Vocabulary words can also be found on my school website!  New words will be added to this list weekly!

1. Whole Numbers:  made of digits NOT fractions or decimals
2. Digits:  the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 used to make all other numbers
3. Place Value:  how much a digit is worth depending on its place in a number
4. Place Value Chart:  a chart that Shows Place Value
5. Label a place value chart (ones, tens, hundreds and thousands in the correct spots).

 Hundred Million Ten Million Hundred Thousands

1.  Numeral:  another name for a number
2. Our place value system is based on 10.
3. Standard form (Base 10 Numerals): written in digits

EX:  4, 567

1.  Expanded Form:  written as a place value problem

EX:  4,000+500+60+7

1.  Word form (Number Name):  written in words

EX:  four thousand, five hundred, sixty-seven

1.  In word form, the ONLY time you say “and” is where there is a DECIMAL.
2. >  Greater Than:  more
3. <  Less Than:  not as much
4. =  Equal:  the same
8.  Multiply:  the number of equal groups (a shortcut for addition)
9. Factor:  a number you multiply
10. Product:  answer to a multiplication problem

1. Numerical Expression:  numbers and symbols you choose to represent a word problem

John has 5 friends and wants to give each of them 4 cookies.  How many cookies does he need?

EX:  5 x 4 = 20

7. X-axis:  horizontal
8. Y-axis:  vertical
9. Horizontal:  side to side
10. Vertical:  up and down
11. Origin:  where the x and y axis meet at (0,0)
12. Draw a Coordinate Plane.
