Math Vocabulary

Measurement Vocabulary:  longest, shortest, longer, shorter, length, inch, foot, yard

addition:  adding two or more numbers together

"count on":  adding

sum:  the answer to an addition problem

addends:  the numbers added together.  The addends in 3 + 1 = 4 are 3 and 1.

subtraction:  finding the difference of two numbers

"count back":  subtracting

difference:  the answer to a subtraction problem

fact family:  In the family 2, 6, 8 there are four equations (number sentences)

2 + 6 = 8

6 + 2 = 8

8 - 6 = 2

8 - 2 = 6.

equation:  an addition or subtraction problem written horizontally.  1 + 1 = 2 is an equation.
